Lighting for the Moving Image I
Lighting film and television sets: the electric and grip departments, tungsten, HMI and LED fixtures, photometrics, color temperature and gels, dimming and DMX control, shaping light with grip tools, lighting people for motion, exposure ratios and contrast, power and distribution, and lighting a scene from script to set.

What you'll learn
- Explain how lighting for film and television differs from stills and describe the roles of the electric and grip departments
- Select and operate tungsten Fresnel, open-face, PAR, ellipsoidal and soft fixtures, including scrims and dimming effects
- Use HMI and discharge fixtures safely, understanding ballasts, flicker, color variation and ultraviolet hazards
- Choose LED fixtures by color system, output, color quality metrics and flicker performance
- Apply photometric quantities, beam angles, photometric data and the inverse square law to choose fixtures and predict stops
- Balance and correct light with mireds, CTO, CTB, green and ND gels, and use mixed and colored light deliberately
- Control fixtures with dimmers, DMX512, RDM, networked and wireless systems, and program cues and effects
- Shape light with flags, nets, diffusion, bounce, negative fill, frames and patterns, rigged safely on grip equipment
- Light people for motion using far-side keys, fill, edge and eye lights, moving actors, coverage and cross-lighting
- Plan and measure lighting ratios and contrast for camera latitude, HDR and continuity, and document setups
- Calculate electrical loads, plan distribution and generators, balance legs and follow electrical codes and safety
- Plan, scout, plot, pre-rig and light a scene efficiently with other departments, and complete a lighting capstone
