Construction Materials and Methods II
How buildings are framed, enclosed and finished: structural steel, connections and deck, cold-formed steel, light wood framing and mass timber, building envelope science, cladding, windows and curtain wall, roofing and waterproofing, interiors and finishes, and embodied carbon, with takeoffs and calculations in metric and imperial units.

What you'll learn
- Describe structural steel grades, shapes and supply chains, estimate steel tonnage and plan a safe erection sequence
- Explain steel connection types, high-strength bolting, welding quality control, metal deck and composite floors, and count bolts and deck quantities
- Read cold-formed steel designations, distinguish nonstructural and structural framing and identify bracing, deflection and thermal bridging issues
- Explain lumber grades and sizes, platform framing and mid-rise wood construction, check joist spans at awareness level and take off framing and sheathing
- Compare engineered wood products and mass timber systems and calculate residual sections using char rates
- Apply the four control layers and calculate RSI, R-values, U-factors, heat loss, airtightness and dew point condensation risk
- Describe wall assemblies, barriers, exterior insulation and cladding systems, and size movement joints and flashings
- Evaluate windows, glazing, curtain walls and doors using energy, NAFS and fire ratings, and calculate whole-window U-factors
- Distinguish steep-slope and low-slope roofing, prevent ice dams, take off roofing in squares and manage waterproofing quality
- Specify partitions, gypsum board, finish levels, fire-rated and sound-rated assemblies, fire-stopping and ceilings, and count drywall sheets
- Manage finishes including slab moisture, flooring, tile, paint and millwork, applying waste factors to quantity takeoffs
- Calculate embodied carbon and waste diversion, use EPDs and integrate materials and methods decisions in a capstone project
