PRINCE2 Processes I: Starting, Directing and Initiating

The first three PRINCE2 processes in depth: the process model and management levels, the project mandate and pre-project, starting up a project (appointing the executive and project manager, capturing previous lessons, designing the team, the outline business case, project approach, project brief and initiation stage plan), directing a project through management by exception and its authorizations, and initiating a project (tailoring, the PRINCE2 7 management approaches, project controls with nested tolerances, the project plan, the detailed business case and the PID), with roles, tailoring for small, agile and program contexts, and a capstone from mandate to authorized project with exam strategy.

What you'll learn

  • Describe the seven PRINCE2 processes, the levels of management that own them and how they map to the project lifecycle
  • Explain the role of the project mandate and the business layer, and why pre-project work should be limited to deciding whether to initiate
  • Carry out the first activities of starting up: appointing the executive and project manager, capturing previous lessons and designing the project management team
  • Prepare an outline business case and project product description, select a project approach and assemble a project brief
  • Plan a proportionate initiation stage and assemble the request to initiate
  • Explain how the project board directs through management by exception, the five activities of directing and event-driven decisions
  • Apply the board's decision logic when authorizing initiation, the project, a stage or an exception plan, and when giving ad hoc direction
  • Agree tailoring requirements and prepare consistent management approaches in initiation, including the PRINCE2 7 commercial, digital and data and sustainability approaches
  • Set up project controls with nested tolerances, create a project plan and refine the business case
  • Assemble and check the project initiation documentation and explain how it is used during delivery and at closure
  • Allocate responsibilities for the early products and tailor the early processes for small, agile and program contexts
  • Take a project from mandate to authorization and reason through exam-style questions on the early processes
