What you'll learn

  • Relate position, velocity and acceleration for rectilinear motion, using calculus, constant-acceleration equations and motion-profile graphs.
  • Describe curvilinear motion in rectangular, normal-tangential and polar coordinates, including projectiles and motion on curves.
  • Analyze relative motion between moving bodies and dependent motion of particles connected by cables and pulleys.
  • Apply Newton's second law to particles using free-body and kinetic diagrams, including friction, curved paths and variable forces.
  • Use the principle of work and energy, potential energy and power to solve particle problems efficiently.
  • Apply impulse and momentum to particles, including impacts with a coefficient of restitution.
  • Analyze systems of particles using the motion of the centre of mass, angular momentum and conservation laws.
  • Determine the velocities and accelerations of points on rigid bodies in translation, fixed-axis rotation and general plane motion.
  • Locate instantaneous centres of zero velocity and use relative-acceleration equations to analyze linkages such as the slider-crank.
  • Write and solve the equations of plane motion for rigid bodies, including mass moments of inertia, sliding versus tipping, and rolling.
  • Apply work-energy and impulse-momentum principles to rigid bodies, including power transmission, clutch engagement and eccentric impact.
  • Model single-degree-of-freedom vibration, find natural frequencies and damping ratios, and assess resonance and vibration isolation.
